We study the ESG characteristics of the actual holdings of U.S. equity mutual funds. By doing so, we obtain a unique set of ESG scores at the mutual fund level that can tell us how well each fund performs on the ESG spectrum. Our holdings-based ESG scores help us to answer a number of critical questions in practice: How much do mutual funds differ from each other concerning the ESG profiles of their portfolios? Do funds that are explicitly labeled "socially responsible" really score higher on ESG criteria compared to conventional funds? Do funds with a better ESG profile perform differently relative to funds with worse ESG profiles?
